Iowa 4-H'ers Compete in National Western Roundup Contests

AMES, Iowa--Iowa 4-H'ers competed in several national events at the recent Western 4-H Roundup in Denver, Colo. In the roundup youth demonstrate their livestock and equine knowledge and skills. Representing Iowa were top teams in hippology, horse quiz bowl, horse judging and livestock judging.
The Scott County livestock judging team placed eleventh overall, earned seventh place in hogs and ninth place in sheep. Team members include Dean Claussen of Bettendorf, Zach Bangert of Blue Grass, Paul Keppy of Davenport and Adam Baetke of Eldridge. Claussen also received sixth place in the overall scoring. Mike Holst of Stockton coached the team.

Iowa's top 2002 horse judging team from Madison County also competed. Team members include Klaire O'Rourke and Jessica Brott, both of Earlham; Kelly Cox of Macksburg and Tiffany Garrett of Patterson. Deana Garrett of Patterson coached the team.

Competing in hippology was the team from Cherokee County. Team members include Kyle Lundsgaard, Eric Rueter, ReNae Patterson and Whitney Hahn. Beth Rueter coached the team.

Entrants in the horse quiz bowl were Amanda Mesner, Tara Miller, Jessica Thompson, Cheyenne Colienke and Kristen Fisher, members of the Clay County team. Tammy Miller of Spencer coached the team.

Iowa 4-H'ers can earn the right to compete in Denver at three events, the April 5-6 Iowa Horse Fair and Jamboree at the Iowa State Fairgrounds (entries due March 1); the June 10 Iowa 4-H and FFA Horse Judging Contest (entries due June 1) and the August 23 Iowa 4-H Livestock Judging Contest (entries due Aug. 1).
