Pork Regional Conferences will Focus on Swine Health

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa pork producers and veterinary practitioners are invited to learn more about improving swine health at one of the one-day 2003 Iowa Pork Regional Conferences scheduled for mid-February. Iowa Pork Industry Center (IPIC), Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) and Iowa State University (ISU) Extension are cosponsoring the series of five meetings at different sites around the state.

The series is set for Feb. 17- Feb. 21 with the program running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at each site. Fee is $20 per person for those preregistered or people may register at the door for $25 each. All fees are payable at the door. The noon meal is guaranteed for those who have preregistered.

Iowa veterinary practitioners are eligible to receive five hours of education credit for their attendance at any of the conference locations, and IPIC director John Mabry said he encourages all veterinarians and their clients to attend.

"These conferences will provide some of the latest swine health-related information for producers, veterinarians and others in the pork industry," Mabry said. "We have an excellent panel of speakers whose topics focus on current technologies including diagnostics, prevention and treatment."

Some of the speakers and their topics are Pat Halbur from ISU, "Circovirus and associated diseases" and "Managing PRRS and PRDC"; Dennis DiPietre, from Columbia, MO, "Global trends in the pork industry"; David Pyburn from USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, "Biosecurity principles and practices for all farms"; and John Schiltz, Iowa state veterinarian, "PRV - the end?"
