Using Ethanol Co-products in Swine and Beef Diets

CARROLL, Iowa - Swine and cattle producers are invited to a half-day seminar on efficiently and feasibly including ethanol co-products in existing livestock diets. The program, "Feeding Ethanol Co-products to Beef and DDGS to Swine," will be held Feb. 4 in Carroll at Holy Spirit Church from 1 to 4 p.m. It will feature concurrent sessions for pork and beef producers on management and cost issues related to adding distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) to livestock diets.

One of the program coordinators, Iowa State University (ISU) Extension swine field specialist Jerry Weiss, said recent research shows swine producers can capture some benefits by feeding DDGS.

"DGGS can be a cost-reducing alternative to feeding corn and can reduce the phosphorus concentration in manure in an environmentally friendly way," Weiss said. "We know there is interest from producers in feeding DDGS to their hogs and we invite people to attend this informative meeting.

Jerry Shurson, University of Minnesota swine nutrition specialist, will talk about the feeding value of "new generation" dried distillers grains for swine. Some of his research has shown that including DDGS in swine finishing diets can reduce the incidence of ileitis and improve pig health. He will explain nutritional formulation and feeding management of diets with DDGS.

Wendy Powers, ISU assistant professor of animal science, will present new information on how to manage manure nutrients, specifically phosphorus, from co-products fed to swine and beef. Recent swine data indicate that DDGS may reduce the concentration of phosphorus in swine manure.

The preregistration fee is $10 per person or $15 at the door. Preregistrations are due Jan. 31. To preregister, send your name, address, phone number and a check (payable to Carroll County Extension) to the Carroll County Extension Office, 1240 Heires Avenue, Suite D, Carroll, Iowa 51401.

For more information, contact Weiss at (712) 335-3103, ISU Extension beef field specialist Pete Olson at (712) 364-3003 or Dennis Molitor, Carroll County Extension education director at (712) 792-2364.

The program is sponsored by Iowa Pork Industry Center, ISU Extension and Iowa Beef Center.
