2/20/03 Contacts: 4-H'ers to Showcase Community Service Projects at Legislative Day AMES, Iowa --Two hundred seventy 4-H members representing 52 counties will participate in the second annual 4-H Day at the Legislature March 4 in Des Moines. The event, organized by Iowa State University Extension (ISU) 4-H Youth Development, teaches youth about the legislative process and informs legislators about 4-H's impact on Iowa through community improvement projects. Each club that participates in 4-H Day at the Legislature will display
information about a community service project they have completed. For
example, the Buena Vista County 4-H Youth Council and the Providence Go-Getters
4-H Club will tell legislators about the Even Start Christmas Party they
hold each year for local Hispanic youth. Members of the County Line 4-H
Club in Marion County will recount how they restored the one-room Liberty
Corner School. In addition to meeting with legislators at the state capitol, the 4-H members will participate in a series of educational workshops. "This year we're going to debate school consolidation, an issue that is being discussed by the Iowa legislature during this session," Brenda Allen, ISU state 4-H program specialist, said. "We're also going to look at the political parties and all of the different factors a legislator must take into account before voting, such as constituents, party policy, personal conscience and research." 4-H Day at the Legislature is organized by ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development with support from the Iowa 4-H Foundation. -30- ml: isufarm |
