Feedlot Meeting to Feature Beef Issues
The beef industry in northwest Iowa is currently facing a lot of issues. On the federal level, individual animal identification, the beef checkoff, a new generation feed additive and phenomenal beef prices are being debate. In Iowa, feed yards are looking at air quality standards and the opening of two more ethanol plants.
These are the main topics to be addressed at the Beef Feedlot Meeting on Jan. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. The meeting will be at the Corporate Center in Sioux Center and is sponsored by the Sioux County Cattlemen's Association, Iowa State University Extension, Iowa Beef Center and Elanco.
"We feel these are cutting-edge issues. For instance, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is currently looking at air quality standards for hydrogen sulfide and is monitoring air quality from an open beef feedlot," said Beth Doran, ISU Extension beef field specialist. "Iowa State University and the Iowa Cattlemen's Association are working to explore alternative technologies for manure management that could replace total containment."
Michael Murphy, Cattle Fax market analyst, will discuss two issues - how high will beef prices go and how long will they remain at these phenomenal levels? He also will talk about the current factors driving supply and demand for beef.
To register for the meeting, please send your name, address and a check ($20/person) to Lyon County Extension, P.O. Box 348, Rock Rapids, IA 51246, by Jan. 7, 2004. For additional information or a meeting brochure, contact Beth Doran (712-472-2576).
