____(Name)____ Attends City Clerk Training

___(Name)___, ___(Town)___, recently completed the first session of a three-part curriculum in municipal management that leads to professional certification. The five-day Municipal Clerks Institute was conducted by Iowa State University Extension July 14-18 in Ames.

Training topics covered a variety of issues facing city clerks. The session focused on financial management and municipal budgeting. Budget topics included a general introduction to the process, bonding procedures and accounting topics. The participants received a general introduction to accounting, an introduction to accounting on an accrual basis and information on converting from cash to accrual accounting. The group also toured the Iowa Capitol in Des Moines and met with officials of the Iowa Department of Economic Development.

The institute is offered to city clerks, deputy clerks, and other administrators, and participants earn credit toward certification by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks.

The program is sponsored by the ISU Extension Office of State and Local Government Programs in conjunction with the Iowa Municipal Finance Officers Association. Instructors include ISU faculty, extension staff, bonding attorneys, accounting experts and city clerks who have completed the Institute. The Iowa State University program was one of the first offered in the United States, and is among the largest of 44 similar programs offered in other states and Canadian provinces.

Participants in session 1 will have the opportunity to attend the second session of the three-part curriculum next July.
