Seminars Offered on Farm Businesses and Tax Issues

AMES, Iowa - Seminars on farm businesses and tax issues offered annually by Iowa State University Extension have been scheduled this fall under the direction of Neil E. Harl, Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor in Agriculture.

The seminars include a session on Farm Estate and Business Planning, scheduled for Sept. 9, and a session on Iowa Real Estate and Insurance, scheduled for Sept. 11. There also will be a two-day farm income tax school offered in eight Iowa cities between Oct. 30 and Dec. 18.

Harl, who is on the economics faculty at ISU and also is a member of the Iowa Bar Association, has directed the seminars for more than 20 years. He is a nationally recognized expert on agricultural economics and law.

The Farm Estate and Business Planning Seminar is aimed at attorneys, accountants and other professional advisers who work with farmers on farm estate and business planning issues in a rapidly changing business environment. Harl said this year's session will emphasize new legislation affecting farm income tax. The seminar is scheduled from 8:30 a.m to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Hotel at Gateway Center in Ames. Cost of the seminar is $120 and participants can earn 7 hours of continuing education credits.

The Iowa Real Estate and Insurance Seminar is for insurance underwriters and real estate brokers. It is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Hotel at Gateway Center in Ames. The seminar will emphasize 2003 income tax legislation, recent developments in federal estate and gift taxes, emerging issues in income and self-employment tax and emerging planning issues of importance to those who advise farm and small business operations. Cost of the seminar is $80 and 6 hours of continuing education credits are available.

The Farm Income Tax School is offered to tax preparation professionals, including attorneys, accountants and enrolled agents. The first day of the two-day school is taught by Harl and the second day by tax attorneys or by Roger McEowen, professor at Kansas State University. Cost of the school is $145.

Dates and locations of the Farm Income Tax Schools are Oct. 30-31 in Sheldon, Nov. 4-5 in Fort Dodge, Nov. 13-14 in Ottumwa, Nov. 24-25 in Muscatine, Dec. 9-10 in Mason City, Dec. 11-12 in Atlantic, Dec. 15-16 in Waterloo and Dec. 17-18 in Ames.
