Fall Forestry Field Days Announced
Iowa State University Extension and the Bureau of Forestry, Iowa Department of Natural Resources are offering seven forestry field days across Iowa this fall. These educational programs are designed to show various management techniques for Iowa’s woodlands and forests.
Other cooperators in these programs are County Conservation Boards, Natural Resource Conservation Service offices, the Iowa Tree Farm Program and the Iowa Woodland Owners Association.
The following lists the dates, locations, directions and cost for each field day. For more information, contact your ISU Extension county office or the ISU Extension Forestry office at (515) 294-1168 or phw@iastate.edu.
FLOYD COUNTY
Aug. 21, 1 to 4 p.m.
Lee and Darlyce Zimmer Tree Farm
Topics: Riparian Buffers-species, layout and design;
Maintenance of Tree Plantings-weed control, gophers and deer; Woodland Renewal-recovery
after grazing,
under-planting, weed tree control, succession; Plantation Management-thinning
and crop tree release; Invasive Plants in Iowa Woodlands
Directions: From Floyd, take First Avenue, west to Adam; north on Adam (becomes
Quarry Road and the River Road) 2.5 miles to 1446 River Road
Cost: No charge
WARREN COUNTY
Sept. 19, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Walnut Ridge Tree Farm
Topics: Production of Christmas Trees-species, shearing,
planting, weed control, marketing retail and wholesale; Management of Black
Walnut Plantations-sites
and site selection, thinning, growth rates and pruning for timber quality;
Viticulture: Grapes for Iowa - selection of varieties, trellis system, pruning,
cost of production and marketing; Tour and Wine Tasting at Summerset Winery
Directions:
North of Indianola, from the junction of Highways 69/65 and G36, east 3/4 mile
on G36

MONROE COUNTY

Directions: From Blakesburg, 1/4 mile south, turn right on 255th Street (gravel),
3 miles; turn left on 710th avenue 1 mile; turn right on 264th Street, 1/2
mile to the Tree Farm.

LEE COUNTY

The Barn Shelter, Shimek State Forest
