Iowa 4-H Horse Jamboree Winners Named

AMES, Iowa - Several 4-H'ers recently earned the right to represent Iowa at the January 2004 Denver Horse Classic. They took top honors among more than 250 Iowa 4-H'ers who competed in the 2003 Youth Horse Jamboree at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

The jamboree features several contests in which youth demonstrate their equine knowledge and skills. The event sponsors include the Iowa Horse Industry Council, Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development and the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

The winners who will represent Iowa at the Denver Horse Classic include the top hippology and quiz bowl teams and top individuals in demonstrations and public speaking events.

Youth earn points for their knowledge and skill demonstrated in equine science and husbandry during the hippology contest. First place went to Cherokee County, scoring 438 points out of a possible 500. Team members include Kyle Lundsgaard, Eric Rueter, Renae Patterson and Whitney Hahn. Second place went to Johnson County, scoring 405 points. Team members include Kelly Johnson, Kristin Martz, Dan Neppel and Jennifer Schuttenhofer. Third place went to the Mills County team of Jennie James, Jennifer Patterson and Kalyn Schaefer.

Quiz bowl entrants demonstrate their knowledge by answering one-on-one, toss up and bonus questions in a timed situation. Iowa's top team from Hamilton County includes Ryan Monthei, Tyler Wilson, Lacey Paper, Tyler Nessa and Brena Elwood. Second place went to the Shelby County team of Kristen Rutherford, Megan Slagle, Julie Temple and Ashley Heflin.

Kalyn Schaefer of Mills County took top honors with a demonstration on "Race Horse Injury." Chris Mason of Sac County won top honors in public speaking with his speech on "West Nile Virus."
