Community Tree Steward Program Offered in Northwest Iowa

The Iowa Community Tree Steward Program will be offered this summer for residents of Plymouth, Sioux, Cherokee and Woodbury counties in May and June. The program develops a network of highly-motivated, well-trained volunteers to assist in the improvement and expansion of community tree resources in Iowa. The program is sponsored by the Iowa Urban and Community Forestry Council, Iowa State University Extension, Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Trees Forever.

The training is offered in classroom and field settings. Participants will learn basic tree identification; species selection; tree planting; tree care and maintenance; pest management; inventory techniques; and program planning, funding, and implementation.

This program is intended for volunteers, Master Gardeners, community forestry and parks staff, tree care professionals, utility company representatives, county conservation board staff, community administrators and those interested in improving community forests in Iowa.

The program fee is $30 for individuals and $45 for couples who share the course notebook. Graduates are expected to contribute 24 volunteer hours improving and expanding community tree resources in their community or region. Volunteer opportunities will be discussed in the classes. Participants must attend all six sessions in 2003 to complete the course.

All sessions meet from 6-10 p.m. for six consecutive Tuesday evenings starting May 20 and ending June 24. For more information, or to enroll in the course, please contact Chris Feeley at (515) 294-6739 or cfeeley@iastate.edu.
