4/9/03 Contacts: Workshops, Entertainment, Activities Scheduled for Iowa 4-H Youth Conference AMES, Iowa -- Iowa high school students are invited to attend the 2003 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference on the campus of Iowa State University (ISU). The conference, scheduled for June 24 to 26, offers a full slate of workshops, activities and entertainment. It is sponsored by ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development. Called "Creating a Masterpiece," this year's conference offers new opportunities and workshops, including diversity awareness, art, leadership development and crop production. Participants also will have the chance to tour ISU's athletic facilities and the Des Moines Art Center. Students who attend the annual conference may register for one of three tracks. The traditional leadership track offers a variety of workshops and entertainment. Touch the Land delegates will participate in outdoor workshops designed to help youth develop an appreciation for how nature and humans create and maintain diverse habitats. Roundup participants will focus on career exploration, investigating agricultural issues, exploratory labs, producing commercials and the livestock quiz bowl. "Whatever track students choose, they meet new friends from all over the state at dances and workshops," Brenda Allen, ISU state 4-H program specialist, said. "Youth who attend conference come back year after year." All participants stay in university dorms and have a chance to experience college life. "This is a conference for teens, planned by teens," Allen said. "It's designed to be fun, while giving youth a chance to learn about career opportunities and experience life on a college campus." Any Iowa teen who has completed 8th through 12th grade this spring may attend the conference. Participants need not be 4-H members to attend. The registration fee is $100 and includes meals, housing and workshop expenses. Registration is due to county ISU Extension offices May 17.
