ISU Extension Offers Farm Bill Analyzer and Publications

Starting Oct. 1, farmers and landowners can update their crop acres and yields at the Farm Service Agency office in their county. The Farm Security and Rural Investment Act offers several options including retaining current corn acreage bases and yields.

A new Iowa State University Extension bulletin, "Commodity Programs for Crops," FM 1872a, describes the three types of crop payments available under the new farm bill, and how acre and yield decisions will affect these payments. A worksheet for comparing options is included.

The worksheet is also available as a computer electronic spreadsheet. Both the publication and the computer spreadsheet are available at ISU Extension county offices or at the following Web site: www.extension.iastate.edu/feci/FSRIA.

The most current version of the spreadsheet program is version 3.0. It contains several important changes in how county average yields are substituted for low or missing farm yield data.

Three other publications, listed below, relating to the new farm bill have also been developed. These are also available at ISU Extension county offices or at the Web site provided above.

"Conservation Security Program" FM 1872b

Conservation Security Program (CSP) is the first time that a farm bill has contained provisions for "green" payments. CSP provides incentive payments for implementing conservation practices on working land.

"Environmental Quality Incentives Programs," FM 1872c

The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) was reauthorized through FY2007, but several significant changes were made to the program.

"Provisions for Dairy Producers," FM 1872d

This publication provides an overview of all major provisions of the dairy portion of the new act.
