9/11/02 Contacts: Pork Producers Invited to Learn about Surviving the Hog Market Price Crunch AMES, Iowa -- As grain prices and hog supply numbers rise, pork producers continue to receive lower market prices. Producers are invited to learn about existing and projected conditions, options for price protections and managing cash flow at a satellite program Oct. 2 from 7 to 9 p.m. The program is sponsored by Iowa Pork Industry Center and Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and will originate from the ISU campus. According to program coordinator Colin Johnson, ISU agricultural economist John Lawrence will present information on the current situation, including a look at inventory numbers from the Sept. 27 USDA Hogs & Pigs Report, and projected expectations. Lawrence also will address grain prices and their impact on market weights and prices. Other topics include managing cash flow, loan consolidation and refinancing opportunities. Additional topics and speakers may be added. Cost of the program is $10 per person. Questions may be asked during the program by phone, fax and e-mail. The program will be available through many ISU Extension county offices throughout the state. Check with a county office on plans to host the program at that specific site. -30- |
