Horse Auction To Benefit Iowa 4-H

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa 4-H'ers who have graduated or are moving on to a higher level horse project can help support the Iowa 4-H Equine Endowment. For the third year, the Belle Plaine Western Exchange will contribute a portion of the consignment fee from 4-H horses sold in its Oct. 6 auction.

"Most 4-H'ers don't sell their horses because they become part of the family, but when they graduate and move off to college they often want to find another 4-H'er to provide the same kind of care to their horses," said Denise Schwab, Iowa State University Extension 4-H and Youth Development specialist.

The auction helps graduating and beginning 4-H'ers to make connections and sell their horses or ponies. At the same time a portion of the consignment fee is donated back to the Iowa 4-H Equine Endowment.

"We feel very fortunate that the Belle Plaine Western Exchange is willing to contribute back to the Iowa 4-H program," Schwab said.

The Iowa 4-H Equine Endowment is a part of the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Some of the activities funded by the endowment include horse leader trainings, the 4-H Horse Jamboree in conjunction with the Iowa Horse Fair, trips for Iowa winners to participate in the Western Regional Horse Roundup in Denver and the horse session of Animal Science Roundup.

For information on consigning a horse to the Oct. 6 auction, contact the state 4-H office at (515) 294-3187 or the Belle Plaine Western Exchange at (319) 444-2320. Auction and consignment information also is at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4H/Agriculture/currentevents.htm
