9/6/02 Contacts: 4-H Honors Meredith Corporation AMES, Iowa -- Meredith Corporation has received the 2002 Iowa 4-H Partnership Award. The award is given to an organization, agency or business that has had an impact on the Iowa State University Extension 4-H program over a number of years. Edwin T. Meredith, founder of the company, and E.N. Hopkins, a Meredith editor, began supporting 4-H in 1919, when they published a magazine for the members of the earliest 4-H clubs. In the 1920s Meredith established an interest-free loan fund to enable young people associated with the youth programs to purchase livestock. Since that time the corporation has made donations to the Iowa 4-H Center as well as the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Md. and employees have contributed time to the Iowa 4-H Foundation. This year, which marks the centennial for both Meredith Corporation and Iowa 4-H, the corporation co-sponsored the first 4-H Legislative Day in Des Moines, providing speakers and giving tours of the Meredith facilities. The Iowa 4-H Partnership Award was accepted by Mel Meredith, director of corporate planning and the granddaughter of Edwin T. Meredith, and Karol Nickell, senior editor of Better Homes and Gardens and a trustee of the Iowa 4-H Foundation. -30- |
