9/6/02 Contacts: 4-H Honors The Des Moines Register AMES, Iowa -- The Des Moines Register has received the 2002 Iowa 4-H Partnership Award. The award is given to an organization, agency or business that has had an impact on the Iowa State University Extension 4-H program over a number of years. The partnership between Iowa 4-H and the Des Moines Register dates back 75 years. Since 1927 the Des Moines Register has sponsored the National 4-H Conference, originally called the National Camp, in Washington, D.C. The newspaper supports the annual event by paying the delegates' expenses and providing a send-off meal before the delegates depart. "This sponsorship is the longest commitment of any donor to a single program in the history of Iowa 4-H," Florine Swanson, executive director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation, said. "The Des Moines Register's support has provided countless 4-H members with the opportunity to attend the conference, which is considered among the highest honors a 4-H'er can receive." Swanson added, "The Register has also been a wonderful supporter of the coverage of 4-H programs and events, particularly during the centennial year of 4-H as they visited all 100 county fairs." -30- |
