AMES, Iowa -- Ann Lovejoy, from Bainbridge Island, Washington, and Ken Druse, an island gardener from New Jersey, will talk about propagating plants and designing sustainable gardens. Both will speaker at the annual Herbaceous Perennial conference from Iowa State University's Department of Horticulture. This year, for the first time, the conference is a two-day event, Nov. 8 in Davenport and Nov. 9 in Ames.

Lovejoy has gardened in Ohio, Colorado, Montana, Italy, and France, before moving to Seattle. She has written more than 18 gardening books, including Ann Lovejoy's Organic Design School and Gardening From Scratch. She has a weekly column in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and contributes to programs on HGTV and National Public Radio.

Druse's most recent book, Making More Plants: The Science, Art, and Joy of Propagation, was named best book of the year 2001 by the American Horticultural Society. He is a frequent contributor to the New York Times and is currently the senior advisor to Garden Design magazine. He has also written The Natural Garden, The Natural Shade Garden, The Natural Habitat Garden, and The Collector's Garden.

Other conference speakers include Harlan Hamernik "If they'll grow in Nebraska, they'll grow anywhere", owner of Bluebird Nursery, Inc. in Clarkson, Nebraska; James Ault, Director of Ornamental Plant Research at the Chicago Botanic Garden; and William Graves, Professor of Horticulture at ISU.

First held in 1998, the conference attracts nursery and garden center personnel, landscape architects, landscape designers, groundskeepers, educators, master gardeners, and anyone interested in learning more about herbaceous perennials, other ornamental plants, and ways to integrate them into attractive and functional landscapes.

The Herbaceous Perennial registration fee of $85 per day includes program materials and lunch. Each day's program begins at 8 a.m. and concludes at 5 p.m. The Nov. 8 conference is at the River Center in Davenport. The Nov. 9 program is at the Scheman Building on the Iowa State University campus in Ames. Books by Lovejoy and Druse will be for sale. Program details, speaker information and online registration are available on the Web at http://www.lifelearner.iastate.edu/1102/herb.htm or call your local ISU Extension county office for information.
