10/9/02 Contacts: 4-H Horse Leaders Training Scheduled For November, February AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University (ISU) Extension 4-H volunteer horse project leaders are invited to attend Iowa Communications Network (ICN) training sessions on Nov. 11 and Feb. 10. The November session (Session 1) will train volunteer leaders in pre-purchase examinations, how to recognize and treat colic, older horse management and how to use the horse project guide. It also will include a preview of the horse jamboree. The February 10 session (Session 2) will cover vaccinations, bits and bitting, model horse shows and activities to use at horse project meetings. "Volunteers are critical to the entire 4-H program, and especially to the horse project," said Denise Schwab, ISU Extension 4-H and Youth Development specialist. "We've seen a lot of direct benefit to Iowa 4-H'ers from our prior volunteer horse leader training sessions." The 4-H horse leader training is offered by Iowa 4-H and Youth Development and the ISU horse science program with assistance from the 4-H Horse Advisory Committee. It is an outreach program of the ISU animal science department. Registration is $10 and is due Oct. 25 to Mary Clancy, State 4-H Office, 33 Curtiss Hall, Ames, Iowa 50011. Registration materials and additional information are available from county ISU Extension offices.
