11/22/02 Contacts: Enhance Your Pork Profits IOWA CITY, Iowa With continuing low market prices, Iowa pork producers are looking for ways to increase profits. A program cosponsored by Iowa Pork Industry Center (IPIC), Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Elanco Animal Health will address several ways to help producers do just that. "Paylean(R), Swine Handling and Antibiotics: Enhancing Your Pork Profits," will be held Dec. 11 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Montgomery Hall on the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Iowa City. Program coordinator Terry Steinhart said there is no cost to attend the event, but preregistration is required by Dec. 6. Lunch will be provided. Steinhart, who also is an ISU Extension swine field specialist, said all three topics are vital in today's pork industry and encouraged producers to make plans to attend. "ISU researchers have conducted Paylean(R) trials that showed using the product would increase profits, " said ISU Extension swine field specialist Larry McMullen. "For instance, a demonstration trial I led at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids showed a distinct advantage in profit, feed efficiency, rate of gain and increased muscle size. A research trial by ISU Extension campus swine specialist Tom Baas had similar results." McMullen and Baas will present information about their respective trials and Chad Steinkamp pf Elanco Animal Health will offer some strategies for feeding Paylean(R). Swine handling sometimes is a concern because of the potential financial loss during harvest season, according to ISU Extension agriculture program planning specialist Tom Miller. Miller will present information on the National Pork Board's Truckers Quality Assurance Program. Matt Wilcox of Elanco Animal Health will review swine handling and trucking techniques. Brian Kremer of Elanco will tell attendees about antibiotic use in food animals, and will lead a discussion on public health, food safety, animal health and animal welfare. Registration for the meeting begins at 9 a.m. To preregister, call the Keokuk County Extension Office at (800) 515-2680. -30-
