11/22/02 Contacts: Advanced Swine Breeding Herd Management Seminar WAVERLY, Iowa -- Pork producers who own or manage a sow herd will want to attend a breeding herd management seminar being held in two Iowa locations in December. The daylong "Advanced Swine Breeding Herd Management Seminar," will be held in Waverly on Dec. 17 and Sheldon on Dec. 18. Sponsors are Iowa Pork Industry Center (IPIC), Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Iowa Pork Producers Association. High replacement rates of females in the breeding herd will take a toll on productivity and profit, according to Waverly site program organizer Mark Storlie. Nutrition, management and genetic type all play roles in keeping the sow at a high level productivity. "Producers need to consider how gilts are developed and how that relates to longevity in the herd, " said Storlie, who also is an ISU Extension swine field specialist. "Dale Rozenboom, Michigan State University Extension swine specialist will present research he's conducted on energy and fiber levels in the developing gilt, and how that has affected longevity in the herd." John Carr, assistant professor in veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine at ISU, will share his experiences in the U.S. and United Kingdom on causes of sow mortality, and will offer management tips on reducing sow mortality. A segment on stock housing, environment and handling will include information on types of housing systems and handling methods. In Waverly, Storlie and ISU Extension livestock field specialist Russ Euken will present this segment. At Sheldon, the segment will be presented by IPIC program coordinator Colin Johnson and site coordinator Dave Stender, ISU Extension swine field specialist. At the Waverly site, IPIC director John Mabry will provide research findings and on-farm examples of management interactions with various genetic types of sows, as well as impacts on longevity, replacement rates and productivity. In Sheldon, he will be joined by Rodney Goodwin, director of production research for the National Pork Board. The Waverly location (Dec. 17) is the Trinity Methodist Church at 1400 West Bremer Ave. The location in Sheldon is the Northwest Community College Auditorium in Building C. Preregistration cost for the program at either location is $25 per person, which includes lunch and materials. Unregistered walk-ins have no lunch guarantee. To preregister for the Waverly site, contact Storlie at the Fayette County Extension office at (563) 425-3331. To preregister for the Sheldon site, contact Stender at the Cherokee County Extension office at (712) 225-6196. -30-
