11/21/02 Contacts: Iowa 4-H Dairy Team Turns in Best Showing Ever At NAILE Ames, Iowa -- The Iowa 4-H dairy judging team placed second among 23 teams in the 2002 North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) Youth Dairy Judging Contest, in Louisville, Ky., Nov. 8 to 10. This was the best showing by an Iowa 4-H dairy team at an out-of-state contest since Iowa won the National 4-H Contest in the 1920s and 1930s. Iowa's previous best showing in Louisville was in 1998 when the team finished 6th place. The team is comprised of Aaron Palmer, Waukon, Katie Hoffman, Earlville, Todd Wolf, Holy Cross, and Jennifer Medlang, Kensett. The group was accompanied by Dennis Johnson, Iowa State University Extension education director in Worth County. Through participating in the dairy judging contest, 4-H'ers learn modern dairy evaluation methods, practice decision making and communication skills and develop the ability to select livestock appropriate for a defined production purpose. In addition to placing second in the competition, the Iowa 4-H dairy judging team took top honors in judging Ayrshires, third place in judging both Guernseys and Jjerseys, sixth place in total oral reasons scores, and ninth place in judging Brown Swiss. The team members' individual results in the various categories are as follows: Aaron Palmer: third in overall individual scores, eighth in the total oral reasons scores, 12th in judging Brown Swiss and 11th in judging Jerseys. Jennifer Medlang: fifth in overall individual scores, 10th in judging Aayrshires and 14th in judging Jerseys. Todd Wolf: fourth in judging Guernseys and seventh in oral reasons. In the annual North American Invitational 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest, also held in conjunction with NAILE, Iowa's Delaware County senior dairy quiz bowl team placed sixth among 21 teams from across the nation. The Delaware County team members are Cara Deutmeyer and Katie Freiburger, Delhi, Michael Tekippe, Manchester, and Kristi Menson, Petersburg. The team is coached by Bob Freiburger, Delhi, and Jennifer Kunde, Manchester. The quiz bowl allows youth to demonstrate their knowledge about the dairy industry through a series of both written and oral questions, used in a double elimination tournament.
