Second Iowa Summit to Focus on Leadership Challenges

AMES, Iowa -- A one-day workshop on challenges and opportunities for Iowa community leaders is planned Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Iowa State University.
Featured keynote speaker for the event is Joel Kotkin, author of The New Geography, a best-selling book on the practices and tools that can help create livable, sustainable communities. Kotkin, professsor of geography at Pepperdine University, has become well known for his ideas on the future of rural America. He asserts rural America represents something different from the larger nation, and saving it is vital. The question is how. He argues decline, depopulation and a slow passing are not inevitable. Rather, these trends can be forestalled and reversed by a change in policy.

Sponsors of the event include the Iowa Rural Development Council and Iowa State University's College of Agriculture, College of Design and Extension to Communities. Following his keynote address, Kotkin will join in a panel discussion led by Barbara Mack, ISU journalism professor. Other panelists are attorney Bob Josten and Marvin Berenstein of Vision Iowa.

Breakout sessions are Coalitions and Corridors-Building Effective Partnerships, led by Chad Shyrock, executive director of the Southwest Iowa Coalition; Welcoming New Residents, led by Linda Albright of Henry County and Mark Grey of the University of Northern Iowa; and Collaborative Problem Solving, led by Scarlett Lunning of Iowa Mediation Services.

Other breakout sessions include Successful Models of Downtown Redevelopment, led by Dave Heiar and Marie Steenlage of Manchester; a Step by Step Guide to Joint Government Purchasing led by Doug Elliott of the East Central Iowa Council of Governments; Successful Models of Coalition Building, led by Buck Boekelman, treasurer of the Highway 20 Corridor Association; Creating Change by Investing Locally, led by Rand Fisher of the Iowa Area Development Group and Maxine Moul of the Nebraska Community Foundation; and How Communities Can Focus their Development Efforts to Target Industries, led by Jeff Rossate of the Iowa Department of Economic Development, Drew Conrad of the University of Northern Iowa, and Joe Raso of the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids Technology Center.

Jerry Van Der Kamp of West Des Moines, president of AGRI Industries and winner of the U.S. Department of Commerce Export Excellence Award, will be a guest at the workshop luncheon. He will be introduced by Paul Lasley, chair of the ISU Department of Sociology and extension rural sociologist.
The program will be presented at the Scheman Continuing Education Center on the ISU campus. Registration is $75 in advance or $100 at the door. Registrations can be sent to Linda Kennedy, ISU Extension to Communities, 288 College of Design, Ames, Iowa 50011-3091, phone (515) 294-8397, lindaek@iastate.edu.
