Fifty-eight Counties to Verify Identities of 4-H Beef Project Animals

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa 4-H'ers may have the identities of their market beef project animals verified in 58 counties. As a result of the new Iowa State University (ISU) Extension 4-H Youth Development identification system, some counties may not meet training and facility requirements and will be unable to serve as verification sites this year.

The new requirements are a result of the new rules that state all 4-H market beef that may possibly exhibit at the Iowa State Fair must be verified at an official verification site. Animals will be weighed, tagged and nose printed and have a hair sample taken for DNA analysis. Animals that will be shown only at their county fairs are not required to go through the verification process. They will be weighed and tagged at their county weigh-in, just as they have in the past.

Another major change this year requires that all steers eligible for breed classes must have their breed tattoo and sire information at the time of verification.

4-H'ers interested in exhibiting market beef at the Iowa State Fair should contact their county ISU Extension offices for details on their verification sites.

The following counties will serve as verification sites: Adair, Adams, Appanoose, Benton, Black Hawk, Boone, Buchanan, Buena Vista, Butler, Calhoun, Carroll, Cass, Cherokee, Clarke, Clay, Clayton, Clinton, Crawford, Des Moines, East Pottawattamie, Fayette, Greene, Hamilton, Hancock, Hardin, Iowa, Jackson, Jasper, Johnson, Jones, Kossuth, Lee, Linn, Louisa, Lucas, Madison, Marion, Mills, Mitchell, Monona, Montgomery, Muscatine, O'Brien, Page, Plymouth, Pocahontas, Ringgold, Sac, Scott, Tama, Union, Van Buren, Wapello, Washington, Wayne, Woodbury, Worth and Wright.
