Iowa Grape Growers Have a New Extension Field Specialist
AMES, Iowa -- Iowa producers interest in grapevines has grown dramatically
during the past several years. To meet this expanding interest, Iowa State
University (ISU) Extension has shifted Mike White, field specialist in
crops, into a half-time appointment in viticulture, which is the culture
and production of grapevines.
Whites appointment is effective immediately through December 2003.
He is located in the Warren County Extension Office in Indianola and serves
all of Iowa in viticulture. He can be reached at (515) 961-6237, mlwhite@iastate.edu.
An Iowa grape producer, Bill Brown, Timber Hill Winery in Leon, said Mike
has shown great passion for the wine and grape culture and is a quick
student. I have enjoyed working with him and I know he will be a great
asset to our new industry.
Jerry DeWitt, interim director, ISU Ag and Natural Resources Extension,
said Even during a challenging budget year, shifting ISU Extension
resources into a viticulture appointment is viewed as an opportunity to
help growers diversify their farm operations and hopefully add economic
stability to the farm.
White will work closely with ISU Extensions lead person in viticulture,
Paul Domoto, a professor in the department of horticulture.
