4-H'ers Present Lt. Gov. Pederson with Plan to Improve Youth Opportunities

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa 4-H youth presented to Lt. Gov. Sally Pederson on May 14, 2002, the "Agenda for Youth Development," which outlines the results of Iowa and National Conversations on Youth Development held in January and March, 2002.

The report sets forth a youth-led action plan to improve communities and increase youth involvement in decision-making, according to Joe Kurth, Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development program director.

In the report the nation's young people state that they are ready, willing and able to be more involved in the decisions that affect them, their families and their communities, Kurth said.

Similar presentations were made May 14 in all 50 states, as well as a presentation at the U.S. Capitol to key supporters of the Conversations, including Sen. Tom Harkin and Rep. Greg Ganske of Iowa, according to Kurth.

Emily Barnd, State 4-H Council member from Linn County, was part of the presentation at the U.S. Capitol. Council members making the presentation to Lt. Gov. Pederson were Ashley Glade, Guthrie County; Brett Moffitt, Union County; and Sarah Smith, Mahaska County.
Some 92 Iowa counties participated in County Conversations in fall 2001 and sent 280 youth and adult delegates to ISU for a State Conversation in January 2002. The delegates were from both the 4-H program and other programs. Iowa sent 19 delegates to the National Conversation Feb. 27-March 2, 2002, in Washington, D.C.

Kurth said that State 4-H Council members plan to visit with both Gov. Tom Vilsack and the Lt. Governor later this year to discuss possible implementation of the Iowa recommendations.
