3/8/02 News Release #1 -- 2002 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference Contacts: Iowa 4-H Youth Conference June 25 to 27 AMES, Iowa -- The 2002 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference will be June 25 to 27 on the campus of Iowa State University (ISU) in Ames. Any Iowa teen who has completed 8th through 12th grade this spring may attend. Participants need not be 4-H members to attend. Called "Paving the Way," this year's conference celebrates the first century of 4-H and looks at how 4-H can pave the way for youth in the next century. Special centennial activities for delegates include discussion of relevant teen issues, assembling in the shape of 100 for the conference photo, and eating a huge birthday cake. Participants to the annual conference may register for one of three tracks: the traditional leadership track; Touch the Land, with an emphasis on the environment; or Roundup, with an emphasis on animal science. Those who register for the leadership track can choose from workshops on challenge training, glass blowing, communication skills, career exploration, conference choir and food designed for astronauts. Touch the Land delegates will take part in workshops on fly fishing, shooting sports education, entomology and wildlife habitat evaluation. Activities and workshops for Roundup participants include career exploration, investigating agricultural issues, exploratory labs, producing commodity commercials and the livestock quiz bowl. All participants stay in university dorms and have a chance to experience college life. In addition they attend social activities such as dances and a formal banquet. "This is a conference for teens, planned by teens," said Brenda
Allen, Iowa 4-H youth specialist. "It's designed to be fun, while
giving youth a chance to learn about career opportunities and experience
life on a college campus." To learn more about the 2002 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference contact your ISU Extension county office or visit the Web site http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4H/. Registration is due to county offices May 17. -30- ml: isufarm |
