Johnson County Family Plays Host to 4-H'er from Taiwan

AMES, Iowa -- Yuh-Jui Fang, a student from Taiwan, will visit Iowa City from June 27 through July 15 as a part of the International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) Representative program. Fang will stay with Joe and Leann Graves and their three children Merritt, Susan and Conner.

The Graves family hosted an IFYE representative in 1999 as well and called it a "very positive experience."

Fang, 20, will arrive in Iowa June 25 and will visit two families until her departure Aug. 3. She will also stay with a family in Jackson County.

IFYE program participants visit the United States from Europe, Latin America, Australia, Asia and Africa to live and work with several host families for three to six months. Participants take part in the host families' daily lives and interact with host organizations, which are similar to 4-H.
"We feel this program is important because of the opportunities it provides Iowa families to learn about another culture, " said Brenda Allen, state program 4-H specialist. "You also learn more about yourself when you share your culture with others."

For more information about IFYE and future host opportunities, contact your county extension office or Brenda Allen at the state ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development office at (515) 294-1567.
