Jackson County Family Plays Host to 4-H’er from Taiwan

AMES, Iowa -- Yuh-Jui Fang, a student from Taiwan, will visit Maquoketa from July 15 through Aug. 3 as a part of the International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) Representative program. Fang will stay with Bill and Kate Carinder and their two children Brent, 16, and Aubrie, 15.

The Carinder family has hosted international students three other times through the Rotary International program and called it "a wonderful experience for all involved."

Fang, 20, will arrive in Iowa June 25 and will visit two families until her departure August 3. Before staying with the Carinder family, Fang will stay with a family in Johnson County.

IFYE program participants visit the United States from Europe, Latin America, Australia, Asia and Africa to live and work with several host families for three to six months. Participants take part in the host families' daily lives and interact with host organizations, which are similar to 4-H.
"We feel this program is important because of the opportunities it provides Iowa families to learn about another culture," said Brenda Allen, state program 4-H specialist. "You also learn more about yourself when you share your culture with others."

For more information about IFYE and future host opportunities, contact your county extension office or Brenda Allen at the state ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development office at (515) 294-1567.
