FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ISU Information Sheets Balance Economics and Environment

AMES, Iowa -- Some producers are starting to feel that there's no middle ground in the struggle between applying sufficient nutrients to raise a crop and protecting water quality. Now there's a resource for them to use in this balancing act.

Iowa State University Extension has published a series of information sheets about best management practices (BMPs) and nutrient management. John Creswell, coordinator of ISU's Nutrient Management Education Project says, "These information sheets are grounded in common sense, agronomic practices and economics. They show producers how to use the latest scientific research to balance the issues of nutrient use and water quality."

Creswell commented further that there are 11 information sheets that address nutrient BMPs and refer readers to additional resources. "The ideas for these information sheets were selected by producers, fertilizer dealers, extension specialists and public agency staff. The topics include: soil testing, phosphorus application, manure resources, residue management, crop rotation, crop yields, nitrogen application, nutrient management plans, equipment calibration, the Conservation Reserve Program, and conservation practices in general."

The information sheets are available (one free set per person) from ISU Extension county offices and from the Extension Distribution Center, 119 Printing and Publications Building, ISU, Ames, Iowa 50011 (phone: 515.294.5247). Copies also can be downloaded from the internet at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/pubs/wa.htm/.

The Nutrient Management Education Project is funded in part by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources through an EPA grant. More information about the Nutrient Management Education Project can be found on the Nitrogen and Phosphorus Knowledge Web Page (http://extension.agron.iastate.edu/NPKnowledge/).
