Iowa 4-H'ers Compete in National Contests

AMES, Iowa -- Twenty Iowa 4-H'ers competed in several national events at the recent Western 4-H Round-Up in Denver, Colo.

In the Western 4-H Round-Up youth demonstrate their livestock and equine knowledge and skills. Representing Iowa were top teams from hippology, horse quiz bowl and livestock judging, as well as individual winners from equine demonstrations and public speaking.

The top 2001 Horse Judging Team, from Wapello County, placed fourth in the Denver Horse Classic. Team coach Heather Angle and team members Casey Payne, Amber Wiley, Laci Keith and Ashley Sample, are all from Ottumwa.

Sample also placed second in overall total placing, third in halter placing, fifth in overall halter, and eleventh in highest total contest score. Laci Keith placed seventh in performance reasons, ninth in total contest score, ninth in total reasons, tenth in total performance and eleventh in overall total placing.

The Mills County livestock judging team placed tenth in the overall contest. Team members included Scott Greiner, Silver City; Samantha Sell and Jim Hilton, Glenwood; and Nathan Stouder, Malvern. Hilton placed ninth in swine, thirteenth overall, and fifteenth in reasons. Stouder placed eleventh in beef. Coaches are Doug Christensen, Hastings, and Nathan Mass, Malvern.

The Hippology team from Johnson County included Jenna DeBrower, Kristin Martz, Rachel Martz and Daphne Nelson and was coached by Kathy Martz. In this contest youth demonstrate their knowledge and skill of equine science and husbandry. Rachel Martz placed tenth in the overall standings.

The Horse Quiz Bowl Team from Van Buren County included Brandin Schrader, Douds; Ben Cloke, Selma; Patrick Thomas, Sam Miller and Christine Hotle, Keosauqua, and team coach Sheryl Muhs, Stockport. Guthrie County's Brea Christensen, Guthrie Center, and Chelsea Bouchard, Aplington, competed in the equine public speaking event and the equine demonstration category, respectively.

One way 4-H'ers can earn the right to compete in Denver is at the Iowa Horse Fair and Jamboree, April 6 - 7 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Entries are due March 1. Other winners will come from the June 11 Iowa 4-H and FFA Horse Judging Contest with entries due June 1 and the August 24 Iowa 4-H Livestock Judging Contest, with entries due August 1.
