Cow-Calf Conference Set for Feb. 23

OTTUMWA, Iowa - Midwest cow-calf producers are invited to the 2002 Annual Cornbelt Cow-Calf Conference on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Coliseum in Ottumwa. This one-day conference focuses on management and production practices in the cow-calf industry.

"The conference provides an opportunity for researchers and cattle producers to come together with more than 70 industry representatives to look at current beef production topics and issues," said Byron Leu, Iowa State University Extension livestock field specialist and a conference organizer.

Nationally recognized extension specialists and two beef producers from the Midwest will talk about a variety of topics including:

* Managing for Value Based Markets, Jamie Willrett, beef producer, Malta, Ill.;

* Keeping Young Cows in Your Herd, Twig Marston, state beef extension specialist, Kansas State University;

* Pinkeye Strategies that Fit Your Farm, Richard Randle, DVM, veterinary ruminant health extension specialist, University of Missouri;

* Making Alfalfa Fit, Rick Plowman, beef producer, Douds, Iowa;

* Forage Species and Varieties: New Faces and Old Favorites, Charles Brummer, associate professor in agronomy, ISU; and

* Using Whole Soybeans in Brood Cow Diets, Chris Zumbrunnen, regional extension livestock specialist, University of Missouri.

The event will be held at the Coliseum, Ottumwa. The Coliseum is located near the Market Street exit off U.S. Highway 34/63. Doors open at 7:30 a.m. with registration and exhibit viewing. Registration is $6 and includes a copy of the proceedings and lunch.

This is the 31st Annual Cornbelt Cow-Calf Conference and is sponsored by the Ottumwa Area Chamber of Commerce and ISU Extension. Financial support was provided by Farm Credit Services of America.
