Dads, Resolve to be Involved

AMES, Iowa -- "Kids depend on their fathers for emotional as well as financial support," says Kristi Cooper, Iowa State University Extension family life specialist. "Children benefit when fathers are involved in their everyday lives as much as possible. And it's never too late to get in on the act."

Cooper offers these resolutions for Dads' involvement, and encourages Moms to help it happen by getting out of the way.
* Don't let Mom or Grandma do something for/with your child that you could do.
* Tuck your child in at bedtime.
* Volunteer to chaperone the next school field trip or event.
* Invite your child's friends over to play. Play with them.
* Make a point to introduce yourself to the parents of your child's friends.
* Spend one-on-one time with each child.

For more ideas to strengthen your relationship with your child throughout this next year, visit the ISU Extension "Me & My Dad" Web site at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/dads/first.html.
