2/27/02 Contacts: Updates for Iowa Pork Producers AMES, Iowa -- A new set of challenges and potential changes is on the horizon for pork producers and Iowa Pork Industry Center (IPIC) has planned a program to address some of these issues. Producers and other members of Iowa's pork industry are encouraged to attend an Iowa Communications Network program on March 14 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The program, sponsored by IPIC, Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Iowa Pork Producers Association will provide information in three specific areas. ISU agricultural economist John Lawrence will provide a general look at market numbers and trends, and the potential impact of the Farm Bill now being debated in Congress, including economic impacts of proposed legislation in the farm bill to prohibit beef and pork packer ownership, feeding or control of livestock. He also will present information on possible market expansion and possible risk management ideas. Bob Hansen, who is in procurement at IBP, will provide a general look at the direction of swine processing, procurement and product enhancement and marketing. He will present information on the effect of shrinking open market hog numbers on market access and price discovery, the type of pig desired by packers compared with what they're receiving from producers, and how the adoption of new production technologies such as Paylean(tm) may impact future grid changes. IPIC director John Mabry will review scientific studies of air emissions
from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs.) The list of approved sites as of Feb. 26 is as follows: Ames -- 13 Curtiss Hall, ISU (origination site) -30- kg |
