12/20/02 Contacts: Nonprofit Management Institute Will Go To New Iowa SitesAMES, Iowa --Iowa State Universitys collaborative effort with United
Way, the Nonprofit Management Institute (NPMI), is setting new enrollment
records. In Des Moines, the institute is drawing nearly 30 participants
in each course. With the success in Des Moines and also in Sioux City,
the institute will expand to DeWitt, Iowa City and Ames in 2003. "The Nonprofit Management Institute is unique in that it incorporates
so many areas of the nonprofit sector--everything from governance and
strategic planning to marketing and fund-raising. The faculty for the
workshops represent diverse fields from academia as well as the corporate
and nonprofit sectors," said program coordinator Krishna Das. "Anyone
seeking professional development in the area of nonprofit management is
invited to participate in the workshops." Institute participants may enroll in individual classes or earn a certificate
in nonprofit management by completing a combination of classes. A different
topic is offered each month over 13 months. Most courses cost $40, with
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) available at no additional cost. The NPMI was established in 1999 by ISU in partnership with the United
Way Management Assistance Program to enhance the management skills of
those serving in the nonprofit sector. Des Moines is now offering its
third set of courses. Iowa State University's Woodbury County Extension
office teamed with the United Way of Siouxland and the Tri-State Graduate
Center to offer nonprofit management courses in Sioux City. The Siouxland
institute began last April and concludes in March 2003. Faculty and staff from Iowa State University, Drake University and the
University of Iowa plus practicing professionals in the fields of accounting,
community development, human resources and marketing have served as institute
instructors. The Nonprofit Management Institute is a cooperative effort of the United
Way, Iowa State University Continuing Education and Communication Services,
ISU Extension to Communities and the ISU College of Design. For program
