12/18/02 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contacts: Winter Sheep Program Attacks Worms Sheep producers have the opportunity to gain knowledge and insight into combating internal parasites. Dr. Suelee Robbe, National Animal Disease Center, Ames, Iowa, will discuss strategic methods of controlling internal parasites. The program is being delivered via the Iowa Communications Network (ICN) on Jan. 6 at 7p.m. "Unfortunately worms and sheep go together in Iowa and controlling the negative impacts of internal parasites is a key component to the success of any sheep operation," says Dan Morrical, sheep extension specialist, Iowa State University. If sheep have access to green grass there is potential risk of ingesting parasite larvae that develop into egg laying adults while living in the sheep's digestive system. Worms are like coyotes in that it is more important to learn how to live with them rather than trying to eradicate them, which is nearly impossible. Dr. Robbe's presentation will focus understanding the life cycle of the parasites and how their population increases and decreases through out the year. The second part of the evenings program will concentrate on ways to develop a low cost, effective system of internal parasite control. The Sheep ICN Winter series is co-sponsored by Iowa State University Extension and the Iowa Sheep and Wool Checkoff Board. Those interested in attending should contact their county extension office for a site near their area. Pre-registration is not required but there is a $5 fee at the door.
