4-H, IPTV to Help Iowans Fulfill New Year's Resolutions

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa 4-H members, volunteers and their families can fulfill their New Year's resolutions to make a difference through the state's first volunteer telethon on Iowa Public Television (IPTV) Jan. 12. IPTV and the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service will present Volunteer Iowa, a one-hour program aimed at expanding the spirit of volunteerism through individual and group commitments of service hours.

Chuck Morris, associate director of 4-H youth programs at Iowa State University (ISU), said the ISU 4-H Youth Development is one of many organizations participating in the endeavor.

"The program is designed to strengthen the volunteer ethic of Iowans," Morris said. "Because service is such an integral part of 4-H, this is a nice fit for us."
Volunteer Iowa will encourage individuals to call in and pledge the number of hours they can volunteer in 2003. Everyone who pledges will receive follow-up information about opportunities to fulfill their pledges in their communities and in their areas of interest.

The television program begins at 8 p.m., Jan. 12. Volunteers should call 1-866-215-9611 (toll-free) to make pledges.
