ISU Neely-Kinyon Research Farm Field Day Planned

"Cultivating Crops and Community" is the theme for the ninth annual Iowa State University (ISU) Neely-Kinyon Farm Field Day to be held Tuesday, Aug. 20, from 4-8 p.m. at the farm south of Greenfield.

Wagon tours begin at 4 p.m. An alternative grazing system that includes standing corn, harvesting edamames and organic research plots will be featured on the tours. Researchers will be present to give an overview of their projects and answer questions. Tours will run continuously with last tour leaving at 5 p.m.

A complimentary supper will be provided by area financial institutions and prepared by Adair County producer groups immediately following the wagon tours.

Three sessions will run concurrently from 7-8 p.m. A workshop on organic weed management techniques will include a demonstration of the flame cultivator. Bob Hartzler, ISU Extension weed management specialist, and Bob Burcham, Neely-Kinyon Farm supervisor, will lead that session. Mike White, ISU Extension viticulturist, and Kathleen Delate, ISU Extension organic specialist, will facilitate a workshop on basic grape production. The new federal farm bill will be the focus of a workshop led by William Edwards, ISU Extension ag economist.

The field day is sponsored by the Wallace Foundation for Rural Research and Development, ISU Extension and Practical Farmers of Iowa. The farm is located two miles south of Greenfield on Highway 25, east one-half mile on 260th Street, and north one-half mile on Norfolk Avenue.

All field day activities are free. The event will be held rain or shine with registration starting at 3:45 p.m. For more information, call Adair County Extension at (641) 743-8412 or 1-800-ISUE 399.
