4/19/02 News Release #2 -- 2002 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference Contacts: Workshops, Entertainment, Activities Scheduled for Iowa 4-H Conference AMES, Iowa -- A full slate of entertainment, workshops and activities is on the agenda for the 2002 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference, June 25 to 27, on the campus of Iowa State University (ISU) in Ames. Called "Paving the Way," this year's conference celebrates the first century of 4-H and looks at how 4-H can pave the way for youth in the next century. Special centennial activities for delegates include assembling all participants in the shape of 100 for the conference photo, taking a look at the history of 4-H and celebrating the Power of Youth pledge through community service activities. Participants to the annual conference may register for one of three tracks: the traditional leadership track; Touch the Land, with an emphasis on the environment; or Roundup, with an emphasis on animal science. A variety of speakers will address the delegates. Author Sam Glenn uses humor and speaks about encouragement and hope. Eddie Slowikowski is former Olympic contender in track and field and three-time NCAA All-American. Julie Evans, a member of the National Association for Self-Esteem, discusses being a leader of one's own life. All participants stay in a university dormitory and have a chance to experience college life. In addition they attend social activities such as dances and a formal banquet. The Sophtones, a four-man high school a cappella group from Urbandale, will provide entertainment at the banquet. Any Iowa teen who has completed 8th through 12th grade this spring may attend the conference. Participants need not be 4-H members to attend. The $100 registration fee includes meals, housing and workshop expenses. Registration is due to county ISU Extension offices May 17.
