4/18/02 Contacts: ISU Extension Staff Honored at Awards Convocation _________(name)_________, _________(title)___________, of the _______(county)______ extension staff, was one of 70 employees of Iowa State University Extension honored at the annual extension awards convocation in Ames on April 10. _______(name)_________ received the ___________(name of award)_________ award for ___(see descriptions of individual awards below)___. or _______(name)_________ was a member of the _______(team name)______ team that received an award for ___(see descriptions of individual awards below)___. The awards were presented by Fred Sick, president of the Iowa Association of County Extension Councils, and Stanley R. Johnson, vice provost for extension. The recipients were honored at a reception and a luncheon. -30- Individual Awards 4-H Youth Director's Award - This award recognizes a professional staff member for outstanding programming in 4-H. County Extension Education Director Excellence Award - This award is given for sustained distinguished performance and educational contributions to ISU and clientele by a county extension education director. Diversity Achievement Award - This award is given for outstanding achievement in teaching that increases client awareness of the value of diversity; involving people of diverse backgrounds in extension decision-making bodies and programs; or providing effective educational efforts to diverse audiences. Excellence in Agricultural Extension Programs Award - This award is given in two categories, one for a crops specialist and one for a livestock specialist. ISU Extension New Professional Award - This award is given to recognize extension staff with less than five years of service who have made significant contributions to achieve the goals of ISU Extension. Lloyd E. Anderson Superior Service to Industry Award - This award is named in honor of the retired director of the Center for Industrial Research and Service and is presented to a CIRAS staff member who has established a level of excellence in service to Iowa industry. Meritorious Service Award - This award is given for meritorious achievements and educational contributions to clientele through dedication to duty and significant contributions to the mission of ISU Extension over time. Outstanding Achievement by an Individual Award - This award recognizes a single outstanding effort by an individual, carried out with much originality or creativity. Pride of Extension Award - This award is given to recognize an innovative project or effort to meet extension client needs and consistently strong office or program management skills. Project Family Partnership Award - This award is given to recognize exemplary work on the part of field staff that contributes significantly to Project Family at the Institute for Social and Behavioral Research.Team Awards. Budget Planning and Program Committee - This committee reviewed current and future extension budgets, and conducted special budget discussions around the state to offer staff a detailed look at the system's financial situation. Money 2000 Team - This three-year effort achieved measurable improvement in savings and debt levels among project enrollees, and increased public awareness of extension's money management education efforts. Of the 1,150 Iowans who enrolled, 31 percent submitted progress reports, documenting $2.9 million in reduced debt and/or increased savings. Northeast Iowa Extension Consumer Horticulture Program - Team members worked with six county extension districts and ISU Extension administration to create a governmental services sharing agreement to provide regional horticultural programming. This agreement established the Northeast Iowa Extension Consumer Horticulture Program, governed by a council representing extension councils, ISU, and the public. The council employs a horticulture program assistant to deliver educational programs and provide resources to county offices. Northwest Area Extension Technology Team - This team was formed in the fall of 2000 to address the staff need for more technology training. During the winter of 2000-2001 the committee arranged for training by local staff on six topics. Sioux County Manure Management Project - Sioux County is a top livestock producing county in Iowa, making manure nutrient management education a priority. Management education began as early as 1994. In 1999, a grant was received from the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture to provide a two-year program directed at helping Sioux County producers manage manure as a resource. Who's Got Your Number? Protecting Consumer Privacy Team - Identity theft is a growing consumer privacy concern affecting more than 700,000 Americans last year. ISU Extension Family Resource Management staff developed "Who's Got Your Number? Protecting Consumer Privacy" in 1998. Nearly 3,500 Iowans directly benefited from the programs. Nine out of 10 program participants learned skills and took actions to protect their personal and financial privacy. Youth Entrepreneur Camps Program - Junior high youth in several Northwest Iowa counties have had the opportunity to participate in entrepreneur camps. Each camp had a different format, but the focus was the same -- helping young people realize that entrepreneurial careers are an option available to them.
