Adults can learn how to lead energetic teens through wilderness backpacking, camping and canoeing adventures June 22 to 29 on the Adult Wilderness Canoe Trek at the Iowa 4-H Education and Natural Resources Center near Madrid. Participants will spend two days at the 4-H Center preparing for the trip, followed by five days in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Minnesota. During those five days they will learn wilderness cooking, ethics, trip leadership and orienteering. Cost is $400, including transportation, meals and equipment. Two hours of ISU graduate credit is available at no cost to educators through a grant provided by Resource Enhancement and Protection -- Conservation Education Program (REAP-CEP). Participants in Wilderness First Aid, offered May 31 to June 2 at Iowa 4-H Education and Natural Resources Center near Madrid, will learn basic first aid and how to administer it in remote outdoor environments. The program is open to anyone with the desire to camp, canoe, backpack or hike. Cost is $65. The program is sponsored by a grant provided by REAP-CEP. "This is your opportunity to learn to lead energetic, outdoor-minded teens through wilderness adventures that combine travel, outdoor skill development, teamwork, sensitivity to the environment and personal growth," Judy Levings, 4-H Youth Development specialist, said. "Skills learned in the wilderness first aid course are applicable to anyone who is doing outdoor education with youth. The course is great for parents taking camping trips with their children."
