4/9/02 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contacts: State 4-H Horse Jamboree Winners Announced AMES, Iowa - More than 250 Iowa 4-H'ers competed in the sixth annual 4-H Youth Horse Jamboree April 6 and 7 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Several of the winners will represent Iowa 4-H at the 2003 Denver Horse Classic in January. The jamboree is sponsored by the Iowa Horse Industry Council, Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development and the Iowa 4-H Foundation. It features several contests in which youth demonstrate their equine knowledge and skills. The 2002 winners who will represent Iowa at the Denver Horse Classic include the top hippology and quiz bowl teams, and top individuals in demonstrations and public speaking. In the hippology contest youth demonstrate their skills in and knowledge of equine science and husbandry. The top scoring senior team is from Cherokee County and includes Kyle Lundsgaard, Eric Reuter, Renae Patterson, and Whitney Hahn. The second place team is from Jefferson County and includes Erika Harlan, Amber Watson, Rose Danaher, and Morgan Mercer. In the quiz bowl youth answer one-on-one, toss-up and bonus questions in a timed event. The Clay County team took top honors and includes Amanda Mesner, Tara Miller, Jessica Thompson, Cheyenne Colienke and Kristen Fisher. Second place went to the Hamilton County team of Katie Lund, Ryan Monthei, Melanie Wilson, Tyler Nessa and Brena Elwood. Tiffany Garrett of Madison County will represent Iowa at the 2003 Denver Horse Classic with a demonstration on "Navicular Disease." Cord Overton of Black Hawk County took top honors in public speaking with his speech, "4-H Equine Endowment Fund."
