Register Now For Fun-Filled 4-H Camp

AMES, Iowa -- Registration is under way for Iowa youth who wish to hone their leadership skills, try new experiences and enjoy the wilderness at 4-H camp.

The 2002 Discover Your World 4-H camp sessions for children ages 6 to 17 begin June 23. Campers need not be 4-H members. Most of the sessions run from Sunday to Friday. Each features a variety of tracks, so youth can tailor their camping experience to their interests. The tracks allow friends with different interests to attend camp together, splitting up only to attend their own track sessions.

"The tracks provide a nice alternative to daycare, since youth can attend more than one session, with a different track each time," Donna MacNeir, manager of the Iowa 4-H Education and Natural Resources Center, said.

The Naturalist track is for campers who want plenty of hiking and fishing. Water World focuses on swimming, canoeing and creek walks. The High Adventure track trains campers to rappel down a 30-foot tower.

A few specialized sessions are less than one week. The Bring a Big Person camp, for 6- to 9-year-olds experiencing camp for the first time, allows campers to bring along an adult. Discovery camp, a four-day session, is tailored to 8- to 10-year-olds attending camp alone for the first time.

Each camp is at the Iowa 4-H Education and Natural Resources Center near Madrid, which is accredited by the American Camping Association. Iowa State University Extension staff members conduct the sessions with the help of professionals and students.

In addition to the camps at the center, 4-H offers a series of youth Wilderness Leadership camps. This year they will be held in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of northern Minnesota, the Rocky Mountains and Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior. Youth must be between the ages of 14 and 18 to participate in wilderness camps. An Adult Wilderness Canoe Trek also will be offered.

For detailed information about the various camp sessions as well as registration, contact the Iowa 4-H Education and Natural Resources Center, 1991 Peach Ave., Madrid, Iowa 50156; phone (515) 795-3338 or email ia4hctr@iastate.edu. Early registration with discounted fees is due by May 20.
