9/17/01 Contacts: 4-H Honors Iowa Pork Producers Association AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) is the 2001 recipient of the Iowa 4-H Partnership Award. The award is given to an organization, agency or business that has had an impact on the Iowa State University Extension 4-H program over a number of years. 4-H and IPPA have worked together by sponsoring the Purebred Swine Councils feeder pig sale each spring. More recently, the association has supported 4-H by providing $25,000 over five years to develop curriculum and activities. In addition to the financial support, IPPA gives hundreds of hours of volunteer time to help Iowas 4-H members become productive citizens. Along with the association, local pork producer groups sponsor workshops, scholarships, awards, shows and weigh-ins and other activities in almost every county in the state. The IPPA also funded the first state-wide swine project meetings in 1998, in which 4-H'ers learned about pork quality and carcass evaluation, and the beginning of the derby contest at the Iowa State Fair. They also sponsored the development of the 4-H Pork Quality Assurance program in 1998-99. For more than 20 years the IPPA has donated to the 4-H recognition program that supports the Iowa delegation to National 4-H Congress. Rich Degner, executive director; Joel Van Gilst, president; Marty Schwager, director of producer information; and Joyce Hoppess, director of consumer information, accepted the award on behalf of the Iowa Pork Producers Association staff and board. -30- af |
