Poster Explains Fall Nitrogen Application Considerations

AMES, Iowa -- A poster titled "Don't Go Until It's 50 Degrees F or Below" is currently on display at fertilizer dealerships, county extension offices, USDA Farm Service Agency offices and USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service offices throughout Iowa. The poster provides suggestions and additional resources to farmers who have questions or concerns about applying nitrogen fertilizer in the fall on their farm.

"Don't Go Until It's 50 Degrees F or Below" was produced and distributed as part of an ongoing educational initiative to improve water quality in Iowa. Water quality improvements in Iowa's surface waters will come through the use of proven, research-based and farm-tested management practices.

John Creswell, Nutrient Management Project coordinator for Iowa State University Extension, says the poster helps farmers better understand nitrogen management in their operation. "The information featured on the poster includes understanding the fate of soil-applied nitrogen and using soil temperature information to determine when to apply nitrogen in the fall."

The poster was sponsored by the Agribusiness Association of Iowa; Iowa Certified Crop Advisors; Division of Soil Conservation, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship; Iowa Department of Natural Resources; ISU Extension; and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.
