11/14/01 Contacts: eBay Auction Features Garfield, Supports Iowa 4-H AMES, Iowa -- What do 4-H and Garfield the cat have in common? Jim Davis, Garfield's creator cartoonist. Davis and his brother were active members of the Lake Galatia 4-H Club in Fairmount, Ind. A proud 4-H alum, Davis has offered the services of Garfield to promote the national 4-H centennial. Beginning Nov. 18, 2001, collectors can bid on one of 54 signed, limited-edition prints featuring Garfield reciting the 4-H pledge. The auction takes place on the popular Web site, eBay (www.ebay.com), with one print available each week. The opening bid for all prints is $250. Proceeds from each sale will be shared between National 4-H Council and sponsoring 4-H state foundations. "Iowa's Garfield print will be the first one sold during the week of Nov. 18," said Albert Grunenwald, associate director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Interested buyers can find the print on the eBay site by typing 4-H in the search field. Bids can be made online or by contacting the Iowa 4-H Foundation at 515-294-1537. Iowa plans to use its share of the auction proceeds to support the future of 4-H in the state, according to Grunenwald. "4-H has been a positive influence for thousands of Iowa youths over the last century, and we want to make sure that 4-H is here for another 100 years," Grunenwald said. -30- A downloadable photo is available at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/newsrel/2001/nov01/nov0111_gf.html.
