Iowa Organic Food Production Workshop Planned

A workshop for Iowans interested in organic food production and marketing is planned Thursday, Nov. 29 in Ankeny.
The Iowa Organic Conference will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Conference Center on the Ankeny campus, Building 7.

The keynote speaker will be Todd Thompson of Co-op Development Services, Minneapolis, who will discuss Organic Agriculture at a Crossroads: The Midwestern Connection. Fifteen workshop sessions are planned. Topics include making the transition to organic production, certification requirements, organic grain production, grain marketing, vegetable and fruit production techniques, organic livestock production, organic dairying, alternative crops and alternative marketing strategies. Presenters will include researchers, crop and livestock producers, wholesalers, and representatives of the restaurant industry. Iowa-grown organic products will be served at the conference luncheon.

Sponsors for the Iowa Organic Conference are the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Iowa State University Extension, Iowa State University College of Agriculture, DMACC, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Cooperative Development Services, ISU Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Co-op Development Center.

To register for the conference, call the DMACC registration office at 1-800-342-0033 and refer to course no. 14093. Meeting schedules and registration brochures also are available at ISU county extension offices throughout the state. Deadline for payment of the $50 registration fee is Nov 20. A late registration fee will be charged after that date. Scholarships are available for students that will cover $25 of the registration fee.
