Second Tri-State Forestry Conference Scheduled

Southeastern Iowa forest landowners interested in learning how to better manage their forested land are encouraged to attend the Second Annual Tri-State Forest Stewardship Conference Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Grand Theatre in Keokuk. The conference will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude at 5 p.m.

"Studies indicate that most landowners have more than one objective for their woodland acreage and often the primary objective is not timber management," said Paul Wray, Iowa State University Extension forester. "This conference has been designed with this thought in mind."

Because of landowners' diverse interests, the conference offers a variety of programs that are designed to help make them better stewards of the natural resources found on their property. The conference agenda includes the following programs:

Crop Tree Management/Timber Stand Improvement (TSI)/Vegetation Control in TSI
Fragmented Forests and Their Effect on Forest Birds
Small-Scale Maple Syrup Production
Walnut Plantation Management and Marketing
Tax Considerations for Forest Landowners
Wildlife Damage Identification and Prevention
Economically Important Diseases of Trees and Shrubs
Soil Types and Properties and Their Effect on Tree Growth
Forest Stand Manipulation to Benefit Wildlife
Economically Important Insects of Trees and Shrubs
Chain Saw Maintenance
No See Em's: Life History of Small Creatures the Live in Your Woods, but Seldom See
Streambank Stabilization Techniques
Prairie on Your Place: Evaluating and Restoring Prairie Remnants and Establishing New Prairie
Weed Control for Tree Planting and Direct Seeding
Managing Field Borders and Edge Habitat for Wildlife
Effects of Environment Manipulation on Stream Biology

The conference registration fee is $35 per person or $60 for couples and includes a continental breakfast and a luncheon. Landowners interested in attending the conference must register by Jan. 3. Walk-in registration will not be permitted. A conference brochure, which includes a registration form, is available at county Extension, Soil and Water Conservation District, and Natural Resource Conservation Service offices, District Foresters, Iowa DNR offices or by writing or calling Paul H. Wray, Extension Forester, 253 Bessey Hall, ISU, Ames, IA 50011, (515) 294-1168, phw@iastate.edu, or a registration form can be printed off from the following Web site: http://ifdc.nres.uiuc.edu/page17.html.

The conference is co-sponsored by the Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri Extension Services, the Illinois and Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the Missouri Department of Conservation, the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Illinois, Iowa and Missouri, the Department of Forestry at Iowa State University, the University of Missouri School of Natural Resources, and the University of Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences.
