Rens to Serve as 4-H Representative to Jamaica

AMES, Iowa -- Former Lyon County 4-H member Nancy Rens, Larchwood, will spend 6 months in Jamaica as an International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) representative.

Rens, who recently graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor's degree in hotel and restaurant management, will leave for Jamaica June 23. She will live with several host families, participating in day-to-day family life and interacting with Jamaican 4-H clubs.

"The IFYE program enables young people to improve their leadership and communication skills, while increasing their international awareness and understanding," said Brenda Allen, IFYE Coordinator for Iowa 4-H Youth Development. The program also is designed to enhance the 4-H program.

"I think this will be a valuable way to gain increased insight on foreign affairs," Rens said. "I'm a person who loves to try new things, and this will allow me to do just that." She hopes to one day operate a bed and breakfast. Rens is the daughter of John and Ruth Rens, Larchwood.

IFYE representatives must be 4-H alumni between the ages of 19 and 30. Applications for the 2002 program are due Jan. 1. Iowa also hosts IFYEs from around the world each year. For more information on participating or hosting, contact the Iowa State University Extension office in your county or contact Brenda Allen at (515) 294-1567.
