Metzger to Serve as 4-H Representative to Switzerland

AMES, Iowa -- Former Lyon County 4-H member Katie Metzger, Alvord, will spend 3 months in Switzerland as an International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) representative.

Metzger, a student at Iowa State University majoring in family and consumer sciences education, will leave for Switzerland June 23. She will live with several host families, participating in day-to-day family life and interacting with Swiss 4-H clubs.

"The IFYE program enables young people to improve their leadership and communication skills, while increasing their international awareness and understanding," said Brenda Allen, IFYE Coordinator for Iowa 4-H Youth Development. The program also is designed to enhance the 4-H program.

"I would like to learn more about my European heritage while I am in Europe," Metzger said. "I'm also interested in learning about the Swiss food supply and how they prepare their food." Metzger said she plans to teach family and consumer sciences after she graduates. Metzger is the daughter of Bruce and Harriet Metzger, Alvord.

IFYE representatives must be 4-H alumni between the ages of 19 and 30. Applications for the 2002 program are due Jan. 1. Iowa also hosts IFYEs from around the world each year. For more information on participating or hosting, contact the Iowa State University Extension office in your county or contact Brenda Allen at (515) 294-1567.
