5/31/01 Contacts: Goodburn to Serve as 4-H Ambassador to Finland AMES, Iowa -- Madison County 4-H member Trevor Goodburn, Winterset, will spend 6 weeks in Finland as an International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) ambassador. Goodburn, a recent graduate of Winterset High School and a freshman at Iowa State University this fall, will leave for Finland June 23. He will live with several host families, learning the language and culture. "The IFYE program enables young people to improve their leadership and communication skills, while increasing their international awareness and understanding," said Brenda Allen, IFYE Coordinator for Iowa 4-H Youth Development. Goodburn, who one day hopes to become a teacher, said, "Some day I may have the opportunity to teach students who are culturally different from me; this opportunity will help me with that." Goodburn is the son of Douglas and Cindra Goodburn, Winterset. IFYE ambassadors must be between the ages of 15 and 25. Applications for the 2002 program are due Jan. 1. Iowa also hosts IFYEs from around the world each year. For more information on participating or hosting, contact the Iowa State University Extension office in your county or contact Brenda Allen at (515) 294-1567. |
